Rakitha Malewana: Living your values
Rakitha Malewana: Living your values
Queen’s Young Leader, Rakitha Malewana taught Sri Lakan students the power of personal values using techniques of the Leading Change course – and the results were truly amazing! Here he tells us what happened.
Since 2015, the students of Mattegoda Vidyadeepa School in Sri Lanka have been engaged in many of my projects. Recently, we conducted a leadership development programme for the newly appointed Prefects’ Guild of the school.
The theme of the programme was “identify and live your personal values to succeed”.
We demonstrated the model of personal values in students’ personal and work behaviours – decision making, contribution, interpersonal interaction, priorities in their daily work, home life, future goals and life purpose that are grounded in personal values – by using the techniques of Module 03 of the Leading Change course.
After completing the Module 03, the big lesson that I’ve learnt is the diversity among people.
Everyone is different! Everyone has different talents and different viewpoints about things. We all have little nuances that make us who we are. It is universally accepted that if we can properly understand ourselves, we can improve ourselves easily to live a successful life.
Module 03 clearly clarified the fact that living with our own values is one of the most powerful tools available to us to shape ourselves to:
- become the persons we want to be
- accomplish our goals and dreams, and
- lead and influence other people.
Furthermore, it made me realise that once we clearly identify our values, we can easily make a fruitful impact on every aspect of our lives. And that helps us to develop ourselves, work behaviours, decision making, contribution, and interpersonal interaction.
So, I decided to apply these skills in my community and planned this workshop.
The workshop was really successful!
We discussed all the above mentioned personal values with students to help them succeed in their future.

On the day after the workshop, my team asked students to develop their personal values and analyse them through a discussion. The overall results were truly amazing!
Some of them wanted to become high profiles in the society and they developed their personal values accordingly. They have successfully identified both positive and negative aspects of their lives.
Another group of students stated that what they want is simply to be happy in their lives. It was noticed that they always mentioned little things that make them happy. For instance, one girl mentioned that she needs to rescue animals that are in trouble, and further, she stated that this is the major thing that makes her happy.
She provided evidence to back up her claim by saying that she is really concerned about watery environments because she always wants to carefully look around to make sure that ants aren’t drowning. Little things, but a big impact!
Similarly, the students came up with brilliant personal values and stated that it is really amazing to think about actually motivating themselves through self-validation.
Module 03 outline really helped me and my team to design the workshop content. Students were eagerly engaged with the workshop and most importantly, they’ve started thinking about developing precious personal values for their lives.
Why values matter
Young people are the key to change. So, I strongly believe that it’s vital to teach them that values give us our sense of purpose.
On a leadership level, when we align with our values, we have more energy and feel more fulfilled because we are leading from what’s really important to us – and that ultimately reflects the true change that we all need in our world.
