Samrawit Assefa Melles

Samrawit Assefa Melles has more than seven years experience in both the government and non-governmental sectors working in the gender and gender-based violence (GBV) fields in Ethiopia.

She is currently working with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) as a Women’s Protection and Empowerment Assistant Co-ordinator based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Samrawit has worked with the IRC in Ethiopia in different capacities toward improving the wellness of women and girls, particularly those residing in refugee camps throughout the country.

Over the years, she has worked directly with refugees from Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia, providing direct case management and psychosocial support services and co-ordinating with different agencies to support survivors GBV.

Samrawit is the IRC Ethiopia focal person for GBV information management system in more than ten refugee camps. She is an engaging facilitator on various topics. She is also one of the IRC's key staff equipped to train on their prevention strategy aimed at ending violence against women and HIV.

Samrawit consistently seeks opportunities for learning, exposure and experience, seeking to continue her work to improve the lives of the most at-risk populations.
