Lal Madathil graduated in Dentistry from Mangalore University in 1992 and completed a master’s programme in Oral Pathology and Microbiology at Kerala University in 1997.
In 1998, he came to the UK and underwent clinical training at the Worcester Royal Infirmary, Hereford Hospitals NHS Trust, and Russells Hall Hospitals, Dudley and Wolverhampton hospitals. He passed the Fellowship examination in Dental Surgery of Royal College of Surgeons (FDSRCS) of England in 2000. In 2002 he enrolled as a post-graduate student at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London (UCL) and gained an MSc in Implant Dentistry.
In 2003, Professor Madathil returned to India, where he was appointed Associate Professor in Oral Pathology and Microbiology at an affiliated college of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. He joined Kerala University of Health Sciences in 2010, as a Professor of Oral Pathology. Professor Madathil is also a Consultant in Oral Health at the Mangalore Institute of Oncology, Mangalore, where he participates in community outreach programmes, cancer education and anti-tobacco initiatives.
Professor Madathil has had a close association with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) as a Fellow since 2010. In 2012 he became a board member of Dental Membership Services and in 2013 he became an International Advisor at the RCPSG.
He is currently involved in establishing overseas training and examination centres in India and abroad, together with capacity building and educational networking in international dental educational activities.
In 2013, Professor Madathil was awarded a Fellowship in Dental Surgery, from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is now an international examiner for the membership examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He is an Honorary Professor at Maharishi Markandeshwar University, India and a visiting professor at the School of Medicine, University of Glasgow, UK.
