Donnya Piggott is an LGBT+ rights activist and the president of Barbados Gays, Lesbians and All-Sexuals against Discrimination (B-Glad), the first advocacy group to promote human rights and other issues affecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-gender persons in Barbados.
Through education on issues of human sexuality and community activism, BGLAD champions the acceptance of all persons and develops a positive agenda for change within Barbados and the Caribbean region.
This feat earned her the Queen’s Young Leader Award in 2015. The same year, she was recognised as a Gender Advocate for the Caribbean region by UNWOMEN.
Donnya has facilitated workshops on sexual orientation and gender identity at the Commonwealth Youth Gender and Equality Network (CYGEN) in Malta. She also joined other young people to discuss LGBT rights at the Kaleidoscope Trust’s Annual Lecture in London, to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT). The Kaleidoscope Trust works to uphold the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people internationally.
Donnya continues to battle prejudice and social challenges to ensure that discriminatory laws and customs are eliminated in Barbados and the Caribbean.
