Azam Bakeer Markar

Azam Bakeer Markar is a prominent young leader in Sri Lanka. He is currently General Manager of Group Business Development, and Head of Sustainability at Aitken Spence PLC – a blue chip conglomerate in Sri Lanka.

He is the founding director of the Sri Lankan chapter of Global Compact, a United Nations initiative to encourage businesses to adopt socially responsible and sustainable practices. He heads the Colombo district branch of the Young Professionals Organisation of the United National Party (UNP) of Sri Lanka, and is responsible for development-related policy formulation for the UNP’s main youth wing, the National Youth Front.

Azam is also Vice President of the All Ceylon Union of Muslim Youth Fronts, an organisation that focuses on community development and leadership, and a member of the Steering Committee of the Muslim Council – the umbrella body of Muslim civil society.

In early 2015, he was appointed to the Board of Management of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute, a multi-disciplinary research forum on Sri Lanka's foreign policy. Last, but not least, he is married with a young daughter and son.
